About us
Sherwood Forest is the world-famous home to the legend of Robin Hood and the iconic Major Oak, one of the UK's oldest and largest oak trees. It is also one of the rarest and most precious landscapes to be found in the UK, an ancient oak woodland.
There are hundreds of incredible ancient oaks, each several centuries old, to be admired across more than 400 acres of what is also Nottinghamshire's only National Nature Reserve, and a protected Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is a haven for a rich variety of birds, mammals, insects, plants and fungi, being carefully restored for wildlife by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, the UK's largest conservation charity.
There is a state of the art visitor centre with shop, café, and facilities including a Changing Places room. There is a play area and den-building area for children, as well as miles of bridleways and footpaths to explore. It costs just £7 to bring a car full of family and friends for the day (free for RSPB members), and tickets and pre-booking are not required.
Check out the reserve's website www.visitsherwood.co.uk to find out more about the year round events programme, including nature and Robin Hood-themed activities, such as the annual Robin Hood Festival each summer.
