How to get to Newark and Sherwood

Travelling by car

Newark and Sherwood is exceptionally well connected, making it easy to reach from across the Midlands and beyond.

Newark sits at the junction of several major routes, with the A1, A46, and A17 all meeting just outside Newark at the Winthorpe Interchange. These key roads provide direct links to major destinations, including London, Nottingham, Lincoln, and the East Coast. 

The Southern Link Road (Middlebeck Way) further improves access, providing a direct connection between the A1 and A46 while helping to ease congestion in and around the town.

Travelling by train

Newark and Sherwood is well served by rail, with convenient connections to nearby towns and attractions.

Newark is one of the bestconnected towns in the region, with two railway stations:

  • Newark Northgate: located on the East Coast Main Line, offering fast, direct services to London, York, Newcastle and Edinburgh, as well as connections to Lincoln and Peterborough.
  • Newark Castle: closer to the town centre, with regular services along the Nottingham–Lincoln line, linking Newark to Nottingham and Lincoln.

Southwell does not have its own railway station, but is still easy to reach by train:

  • The nearest station is Fiskerton, around 2 miles from Southwell. From Fiskerton, visitors can reach the town by a short taxi ride, bus journey, or a scenic walk.

Ollerton does not have a direct rail station, but is easily accessible via nearby towns:

  • The closest major station is Newark Northgate or Newark Castle, visitors can continue their journey by bus or taxi, with regular services running into Ollerton from Newark and Mansfield.

Edwinstowe is also reached via nearby stations:

  • Nearby rail stations include Mansfield and stations within the Nottinghamshire network; visitors typically complete their journey by bus or taxi from these stations.
  • Travel from nearby rail stops such as Fiskerton or Nottingham can be combined with bus connections to reach the village.

Travelling by air

The Newark and Sherwood area is easily accessible from several regional and international airports, offering a range of travel options for visitors arriving from across the UK and abroad.

The nearest airport is East Midlands Airport (EMA), located around 27 miles from Newark (approximately 45–60 minutes by car). They also offer a wide range of on-site car rental providers, including major brands such as Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar and Hertz, with vehicles available just a short walk or shuttle from the terminal.
